Back to School Essentials: One Skirt, Three Ways

2010 High School Clique Edition

I have to preface this post with a disclaimer: the high school I attended wasn’t particularly big enough for cliques. If you did one thing, you probably did everything. For instance - I played leading roles in the musicals, was a part of drama club, chorus, band, captain of the swim team, in art club, honors society, and academic clubs like science olympiad and envirothon.. You weren’t ‘just’ a jock, or ‘only in academia’. You participated in all extracurricular activities, or you didn’t
That being said, I absolutely identified with the Drama Nerds and Chorus Kids most! If I had gone to a bigger school and could have only chosen one outlet, it would have been the Theater & Music department, hands down.

But - what’s the fun in styling one absolutely phenomenal (under $25!) skirt from Target three different ways for back-to-school (even if you’re beyond those days) if we can’t channel our 2010s High School tropes?
But don’t let my commitment to the theme turn you away - all of these outfits are super cute regardless of your vibe, and show the vast scope of how this skirt can be styled. It’s so versatile! It truly is a piece for your every mood.

The Art Student

She’s always in the Art Room. She rolls her eyes when someone says they don’t listen to podcasts, and she always has a travel mug full of coffee (black) in the morning. Her beret is from Paris, she has a pair of patterned black tights for every day of the week, and you know those Doc Martens are vintage. She wore blue light blocking glasses before it was cool, and she’s had three different hair colors this year. But don’t let her RBF fool you, she’ll gladly take you to the nearest art museum and geek out over Matisse, and will teach you which coffee shop pulls the best oat milk cortado.

The Cheer Captain

She’s the most optimistic person you’ve ever met - forgot a pair of gym socks? That’s no problem, you can borrow one of hers! Need a tip on how to have the perfect pony? She’s got an extra hairband (and bow!) at the ready. She can kick higher than your head and somehow never spills anything on any part of her crisp white uniform. However, if you tell her cheerleading’s not a sport, or that you don’t know how a ditz like her could even tie her shoes, prepare to get a front hurdler to the face.

The Drama Queen

Name a Musical. She probably knows all the words to at least two of the songs - and if she doesn’t she’ll know them by the end of tomorrow. She can’t wait to tell you about her new LaDuca character shoes she got as a gift from her Aunt who works on Broadway - but it’s got to wait until after rehearsal. If you ask her why she’s wearing all black the day before opening night, she’ll simply roll her eyes (because she’s on vocal rest). She’ll always say ‘there are no small parts, only small actors’, but will absolutely cry in secret if she doesn’t get the role she’s gunning for. When she’s not marking for dress rehearsal later, she’s studying her lines and prepping for next month’s audition for The Scottish Play”. She’s the perfect mix of casual, crafty, and Type A, and a fiercely loyal friend.
