Halloween 2022: Easy & Affordable Costumes

If you’ve been here a while, you know I love all things Halloween & Spooky Season.
This year I’m sharing not one batch of halloween costumes, but three! The first series is my classic - a group of Easy & Affordable Costumes.

For these costumes, most of the elements should already be in your closet - and if they’re not, each one has a link to shop where I got everything. All of the below are affordable, comfortable, and easy to pull off!

Dorothy from Wizard of Oz

For dorothy, all you really need is three things: a dog toy, a blue gingham dress, and glittery red shoes! The best thing about Dorothy is she’s so iconic - you don’t need an exact replica in order to be recognized as the key character from The Wizard of Oz. And because of that, you can easily find a blue gingham dress that can be worn year round!

Emily Cooper from Emily in Paris

While Emily tends to dress in Designer Garb; that wouldn’t exactly meet the ‘easy and affordable’ qualifier. So, to be recognized as Emily in Paris, I’ve rounded up these tips to put together the perfect Emily Cooper Costume:

  • Opt for bright patterns and colors - power clashing is absolutely an option

  • Layer up! Under-layers, outerwear, tights; all are great options

  • Fun high heeled shoes are a must!

  • Accessorize! Don a hat, beret, neck scarf, fingerless gloves… you name it

  • Have a statement bag. There’s no such thing as ringarde, and the more unique the better.

  • Rock a bold lip! Pinks and reds are Emily’s usual

  • Make sure you have Emily’s signature camera phone case

Coraline Jones

If you haven’t seen Coraline and don’t recognize this costume, I suggest you make sure that amazing animation is queued up right after you read this post!
For Coraline, you can go as all out or subtle as you want. I stuck with the easier route and just made sure I had the recognizable blue bobbed hair and yellow rain jacket. For this look, don some skinny jeans, draw on freckles, and put on boots! Bonus points if you have yellow rain slickers.

If you want to make this costume spookier, you can use special effects makeup to have sewn-on button eyes, or make a pair of button sunglasses.

Ariel from The Little Mermaid

There’s so many recognizable Ariel looks. You can wear a purple bralette with a green sequin skirt; you can thrift an 80s wedding dress with puffed sleeves; you can grab a sheet and rope for newly-legged Ariel; or you can go for the more re-wearable look I did: Kiss The Girl Ariel.
All you need is: black heels, a midi navy skirt, a light blue blouse, and of course - the red wig. Encorporate props like a fork or a stuffed sidekick like Flounder or Sebastian!

Mia Thermopolis from Princess Diaries

I have to admit right away - if you want a best friends costume: chose Mia and dress as a ‘before’ and ‘after makeover’ option! (the difference between the two of you would be just makeup and a blowout)

I opted for the ‘before’ Mia. I brushed out my textured hair, grabbed my blue light glasses and a headband to start the look. For my outfit, I didn’t have to look further than my closet with: my husband’s tie, a light blue button down, a blue plaid pleated skirt, black knee high socks, and chunky black loafers.

Who are you dressing as this Halloween? Let me know in the comments below. And as always, feel free to follow along for all of the fun on instagram by following @sarah.kowalchuk, or on tiktok @sarah.kowalchuk as well!

xx, Sarah
